Madison, Wis. (Aug. 13, 2010) —Heavy storms that swept through a large portion of Wisconsin in late July will result in about $20 million in claim payments to customers of American Family Insurance.
American Family, Wisconsin's largest insurer of homes and private passenger autos, has paid approximately $16 million on wind and hail claims, and expects that total to reach about $20 million after the more than 4,500 claims are completed.
The company's catastrophe team is working with local agents and claims offices to respond to customers in the Appleton, Wausau and Rice Lake areas whose homes, autos, businesses or farms were battered by the heavy storms.
American Family's vehicle inspection drive-in site in Rice Lake closed earlier this month, and the drive-in site in Appleton will close at the end of the day today.
Homeowners insurance policies covers wind and hail damage to homes and personal property. The "comprehensive" section of an auto insurance policy provides coverage for wind and hail damage to vehicles.
Customers often ask for advice on selecting a contractor or repair shop. It is usually best to select one who has operated in the area for several years, is insured and bonded, and will provide a written guarantee for the work performed.
