American Family Insurance sustainability project earns award

Madison, Wis. (Aug. 30, 2010) —An American Family Insurance lighting retrofit project was recognized recently with an award from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

The lighting project was completed at the company's East Region building, located at 302. N. Walbridge Avenue on the east side of Madison.

As a result of the lighting retrofit, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by approximately 1.7 million pounds a year.

The award recognized the project's designer, Rodney Heller, of Energy Performance Specialists.

In addition to increasing lighting efficiency, American Family has implemented many other initiatives including increasing the amount of recyclable items captured and recycled, creating aggressive paper-reduction programs and auditing company buildings to identify energy-reduction opportunities and increase energy efficiency.

"American Family's ongoing sustainability projects highlight not only our commitment to environmental stewardship, but the sense of social responsibility we feel to the communities where we - as well as our customers - live and work," says Annette Knapstein, vice president of business and workplace services.
